Oh, and I thought the fact that whatsherface DIDNT sleep with him was one of the best parts of the movie. I mean the whole expectation is that hes gonna get the girl, and she refuses him, and not because shes worried that hes married to his superherohood or because shes afraid of his dangerous world, but because he was a thoughtless dick, and she knows hes always gonna be a thoughtless dick, and she doesnt wanna get romantically/sexually involved with that, even if she is attracted to him ( ... )

Electra

Ultra Violet
Aeon Flux
not just yet but coming soon will be Wonder Woman as written and directed by Joss Whedon

They are out there. You just have to look.

I never saw aeon flux but i meant to. Didnt see catwoman either, but I heard it was bad. I did see Electra, which was bad, but not quite as bad as people said.

Ultra Violet was probably the worst film I ever saw in a movie theater. I was continually throwing up my hands in disbelief/exasperation, sighing loudly and rolling my eyes. I NEVER walk out on movies and I almost tried to drag four friends out with me.

What does it say when all (maybe not Aeon Flux) superhero movies starring girls suck? Hopefully we can count on Joss not to screw up wonder woman.

Does fifth element count? that was pretty good.

"...not just yet but coming soon will be Wonder Woman as written and directed by Joss Whedon"
Not actually, alas.

The best example I can think of for a girl-kicking-ass movie is Tank Girl who at least doesn't wear skintight vinyl and ridiculous high heels ...

And yeah, even in the midst of my ridiculous fangirl squeeing, I was annoyed at Pepper wobbling around in that stupid, stupid outfit.

Yeah, I don't think that Wonder Woman is going to be the one that proves me wrong, especially when it's not even out of the scripting stage.

And yeah, Tank Girl was pretty good.... but hey, still a lot of weird objectification (geh Liquid Silver). It bothers me that I have to get my feminist narratives from BSG, but there you have it.

I like the narratives from BSG, but Whedon not so much. His idea of feminism is a small tiny girl that can kick everyone's ass. What?

Yeah, I'm starting to see the dark side of Whedon, too. Watched an episode of Firefly last weekend and was like, 'wait, where these undertones always here?'

It makes me sad. I miss liking things. T_T

Yeah I know :/ Whedon's got his own fetishes and he does write some good characters, male and female...like I like Zoe and Wash a *lot*. But there is some crazy stuff in there.

And Frank Miller. God. Don't let me get started. He's like the king of misogyny. I was paging through a Daredevil omnibus he did and I was like, not only is he drawing with his goddamn feet the women only exist in this world to get sexually assaulted or are Elektra, who can't get over her "one-true-love" which makes no sense since he's a complete and utter asshat. Ass on the head.

A good comic I'm reading right now is Crossing Midnight. If you want to check out excerpts you can by downloading this pdf (I'd just right click, it takes forever to load as it is like 65 megs)http://www.dccomics.com/media/excerpts/7369_1.pdf

I love you too!
I was in a conversation on Saturday that you would have really liked. (re: comics) I was with Kit, and three of our friends (all guys) and we talked about how every time a good female character in comics goes bad they tart her up. So the guys were basically like, besides the basic titillation factor, there is this fear of the aggressive woman, and the only way to make it palatable to a male readership is to make her sexually aggressive. Which is bad BUT SEXAY and could be tamed by a man and turned back to her more good girl self.
And we also discussed since most of these female superheroes are wearing form fitting clothes it is pretty hard to get over the top of that to make them look bad, but they manage it ;)
Sorry about the thesis, it was just a conversation I know you would have liked to have been part of :)

I actually rather liked Aeon Flux, although I know it got bad reviews; but there were still a lot of fetishistic overtones that emphasized her status as a sex object. No comment on the first three, as I haven't seen them and heard that they were uniformly 1.) objectifying and 2.) fucking awful.

I don't remember the overtones (it's been a while since I saw the movie), but maybe I'm conditioned not to see them. By way of comparison, can you point out a movie that objectifies men in a similar 'sex object' way? Then we can find out if I'd be similarly irritated. I'm curious--can men be objectified?

I understand you're not trying to start a fight, and I'll try to stick with that. But I'm not asking for good politics; I'm asking for not-completely-retrogressive politics. One woman deciding not to sleep with Tony Stark after she'd already indicated that she's sexually available does NOT a progressive movie make, especially when every other woman in the movie is either a cowering Afghan villager or a scantily-dressed sexpot.
