Somebody explain to me how The Ying Yang Twins' 'Wait' got nominated for a 'Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group' Grammy. I mean, seriously. 'Gold Digger' I understand, because that is some catchy shit, and not overtly misogynistic. However, let's have a look at 'Wait', euphemistically subtitled as '(The Whisper Song)' because the Twins in ( Read more... )

Don't think I'm defending 'My Humps' (which is a shallow and repetitive piece of work), but I'd prefer it to that. No contest.

Besides the rather crass language, I don't see how the song is so terrible. The guys are just rapping about sex, which is a wonderful and enjoyable part of life. Yes, the term "bitch" is a little derogatory in its classical usage, but that's just how rappers talk. Maybe it's some subliminal degrading shit to women, but I really don't think so. When you look at the volume of rappers' work that talks more about their ability to pleasure women than to achieve pleasure for themselves, I'd say music is changing for the better.

Also did you read those two articles on Slate about french rap vs riots and "Humps" as the worst song ever? They are pretty interesting.

I think that, besides the fact they have NO OTHER WORD FOR WOMANKIND, it's just that it's an awful song. They couldn't find anything better?
Also, I've read every Slate article ever. I don't know why.

while that's atrocious, i have a hard time caring because 1. my favorite rap record of last year was northern state's all city and 2. the only grammy category that matters is best contemporary folk album. almost always great.

All City = heee. It was so fun seeing them live.
What're your feelings on this year's CF nominees, though? I feel like I've been wrapped in an indy-folk bubble because I haven't heard of a single one of them.

i'd say the odds on favorite to win is bruce springsteen, for a record that i thought was ok - though i hear that it has grown on people and i spun it maybe three times. that's the only one i've heard though. i love john prine, and ry cooder's a cool guy. nickel creek is the only winner of the past 10 years whose record wasn't spectacular.
---i didn't like all city when it first dropped, and i still prefer dying in stereo. but it's all redeemed by the line "i didn't ask but what the heck?/ i'mma lead this fucking army like i'm chang kai shek"
