Let's ignore the blatantly unnecessary things that the TSA does for the moment to actually praise them for doing one thing right.
In Chicago, they created a "families" line in addition to the regular line.
We were going to go through the elite status line, when they directed us to the other line saying that there was a special line for families. We were skeptical about it, but went anyway where they then let us pass through a roped off section. Sure enough, there was a families only line. This was a great idea.
First off, this line was shorter than all of them. Great!
Second, we understood why the family in front of us was taking forever to get every liquid, every shoe (even the children's shoes.. yes, they made us take off V's little pieces of stitched leather), every laptop, every blanket and jacket, and disassembling strollers and car seats. And then when they took all the time to collect it from the other side, it gave US the time to do exactly the same disassembling with all of our pieces. And then, it gave the family behind us the same time to unload while we spent all our time doing collection and reassembly.
This meant we were neither holding up people with our disassembling, nor were we holding people up with our reassembly. It was a beautiful tiny piece of optimization.
