CHARACTER
NAME(S): Kuchiki Byakuya (Byakuya Kuchiki)
FANDOM: Bleach
BACKGROUND HISTORY:

A long, long time ago Byakuya was just a young lad practicing to be a Shinigami on his manor. Back then he was hot headed and had some semblance of a personality. Then Captain Yoruichi would please games with him, stealing the bow tie in his hair and calling him a little boy "who played rather that focused". Byakuya's grandfather, Ginrei Kuchiki served as his inspiration to work as hard as he did and instilled his philosophy of obeying the rules.

As the 28th Head of the Kuchiki Clan and now the Captain of the 6th Division of the Gotei 13, Byakuya adopted this philosophy to the very extreme. Until 55 years before the beginning of the Bleach timeline when he met his wife, Hisana. Even though she really didn't love him back - he gave her everything he could, even if it was against his family's wishes. Right before she died, Hisana asked Byakuya of one thing, she wanted him to find the sister that she abandoned and tried to find all those years ago - he was never to tell her that . He promised on his parent's graves that he would never break the rules again if he found Rukia. A year after Hisana died, Byakuya found Rukia in the Shinigami Academy and adopted her as his little sister. He told the servants to tell her a lie, that the only reason that he adopted was because she looked like his wife - creepy. Though, he was always cold and uncaring for her as if she was a menace to him.

Fast forward to when Rukia gave Ichigo her powers. Aizen had manipulated it so that that he would be the one to drag Rukia back to Soul Society. He had been torn by his promise to his parents and the promise that he held in his heart to Hisana to protect Rukia. However, the rules were the rules and he dragged her back, but not before he put Ichigo in his place. Conflicted even further when Rukia was ordered to be put to death, he did nothing to stop it. To respect the rules, he stops Ganju and Yamada's attempt to save her and then in a more heated battle, Renji. It isn't until Byakuya has another face off with Ichigo, right as Rukia is about to be executed that he asks Ichigo "If I don't follow the rules, who would enforce them?". Ichigo's reply inspired Byakuya to treat Rukia in a different light. Before any conclusion of the match, Aizen Sosuke interfered. Byakuya ended the fight and rushed to his sister's side to intercept Gin's blade into his own body.

After the battle with Aizen, as he lies being healed, he tells Rukia the story of his promise to Hisana and asks for her forgiveness. After this, he asks for her forgiveness before he passes out. He spends the remainder of the arc in a hospital bed, with Renji looking over him trying to tell the Captain that he is sorry. Before he can, Ichigo and Orihime interrupt. Byakuya is left to ponder whether or not Ichigo is ever going to call him by his title.

After that, Byakuya has several pivotal battles - though most of them are to save Rukia and there is one pivotal fight against the Arrancar.

TIMELINE SUMMARY:

Since I'll be playing him from the "Turn Back the Pendulum" arc, Byakuya is a young boy. He lives with his grandfather on the Kuchiki estate, though whether or not his parents are alive at this point and time is not stated. However, it is before the whole debacle with Aizen (he is starting to make his move by creating the Vaizards), before Hisana and before Rukia. Due to the fact that his grandfather is very demanding and was the captain of the sixth squad before him, Byakuya was rarely around people nor was he around people his own age. Hence why he befriended (the term is used loosely) Yoruichi and as implied by Bleach canon, Aizen Sousuke.

During this time, Byakuya is also being trained by the leader of the 2nd Squad, Yoruchi. She constantly torments him; stealing his hair ties, forcing him to race her etc..

Adjusting to Rivelata: Byakuya will not be amused B| He will hate the fact that he wasn't invited and forced to come here nor will he be pleased that there is not an estate staffed to his desires waiting for him.

PERSONALITY:

I've bolded the personality for his timeline.

↘ Turn Back the Hands of Time: Byakuya as shown as a child is - despite his best efforts to be like his grandfather and train as hard as he can - is rather like Ichigo. As soon as Yoruichi teases him about his hair and his flash step, he has to prove that he is ten times better than her flash step. His grandfather has to comment that Byakuya, even with his devotion and focus, needs to be less hot headed. He's a brat all around: hot-headed, spoilt, sarcastic and haughty - well on his way to being as arrogant as his adult self. In addition, thanks to Yoruichi he's paranoid - everything bad that happens to him is her fault.

↘ Pre-soul society arc: In that arc, he's extremely cold and a hardass to the line. Ichigo disrespected him, and therefore he almost executed him when he went to retrieve Rukia. He doesn't care about the relationships in jeopardy because of Rukia's execution, all he cares about are that there are rules being broken. He's also very, very, conflicted about his promises to Hisana and to those on his parents' grave. He is a complete contrast of Ichigo - he fights for honor and pride, rather than friendship (and breaking all the rules in the process). He has only disdain for Rukia, seeing all rules he broke in order to adopt her.

↘ Post-soul society arc: He's still dead serious, a flicker of emotion doesn't even make it across his face - even in battle against the arrancar. Ichigo opened his eyes to see that the law isn't always just or meant to be followed. Still, he thinks that Ichigo should show him respect, and displays some disdain for him - but it isn't the searing hate that was displayed before. After Rukia's ordeal, Byakuya shows to actually be protective of his little sister even to sometimes refer to her as his "pride". He often comes to her rescue (as shown in the Bount Filler arc of Bleach and within the manga), but he also shares traits with her.

Byakuya has a hidden side that often comes out as his own comic quirks. He does calligraphy, flower arranging and has traditional tea ceremonies with the head captain. However, he loves to bake and make candies - but the molds that he uses (and his art in general) is rather like Rukias. Rather than bunnies, he takes the shape of ... some ... blob: the seaweed ambassador. When Yachiru denies the candy he made with the seaweed ambassador, he gets really offended even though Renji thinks it's a brilliant ploy. Though, it is as meticulous as all the other aspects in his work. He attends all the meeting that Renji and Rukia miss - from the Lieutenant meetings to the meetings of the Shinigami Women's Association. He does make jokes, but he's always so serious that it never ever comes across as humor.

He has known to smile, often at the weirdest of moments. For instance, he smiled when he was asking Rukia for forgiveness - while he was bleeding out everywhere. Another instance would be when Renji asked him if he attended Rukia's meetings and all he did was give a small smile in response.

SO, IN SUMMARY: Byakuya is cool, calm, collected, arrogant, conflicted, caring, adorable and filled with faults that he tries to hide under his status and money.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

  • Flash Step (shunpo): The ability allows Byakuya to run faster than others through some sort of footwork. Though in the show he's shown to be just a hair slower than Yoruichi, the Goddess of Flash.

  • Kidou: Or the Demon Arts; it is a form of combat for shinigami where they focus all their spirit energy into magic spells. Byakuya specializes in the forms of Binding and Destruction. During this timeline, he still has to use an incantation to achieve the maximum effect.

  • Swordsmanship: Byakuya is an excellent swordsman, training constantly to become better and stronger. Coupled with his speed, he's formidable in a fight. In canon, Senbonzakura has probably already been released (1000 Cherry Blossoms; the sword breaks into 1000 pieces that look like flower petals) and he was working to achieve Bankai.

  • Hand-to-hand combat: Seeing as he was trained by the captain of the covert ops, Byakuya is excellent at hand to hand combat.
