flash fiction

I am submitting the following story as part of my entry to LEO Weekly Booksmart Challenge, but I figured I would share it with you guys. Let me know what you think. It is flash fiction (the criteria was fiction or poetry under 325 words) and it is a parody, so please don't take it literally and get all defensive (or accusatory).

This is interesting to me because it gets me thinking about intolerance and conformity-demanding social attitudes. It is kind of offensive and ridiculous-seeming on the surface, but I think it is that difficulty that gets one thinking about it in a bigger sense. If it was about something like reforming someone who was being politically incorrect it would just be trite and easier to dismiss.

Yeah, it is supposed to serve as a commentary, in parody form, on Public Intoxication laws and mandatory alcohol and drug treatment as prescribed by the courts. I got the idea from an open mic I started down here. Our first one, in New Albany, had a pretty low attendance, and everyone's poems were riddled with thanks to Jesus and God. My fiancee', being quite atheistic in nature, commented on the drive home that it was ridiculous that they would have been offended by one of my drinking or sexual poems, but they would have thought it absurd that their poems should offend anyone. I, being quite agnostic (always questioning everything, but on both sides) but leaning to a more unified theory of science and religion, quipped that there should be a support group for religious zealots where they used alcohol to in the recovery process. I thought, then, that this would make a great (maybe just good) social commentary. Two nights later I got drunk and wrote it.

That sounds hilarious, I would have loved to see people getting offended at each others' poetry, the expressions on their faces etc. Seems like it would really add something to the performance, esp if you had it on video.
