She grins as if winning
a small victory as I
sing Paul Simon songs
over NPR on the radio.
Pakistani lawyers take to the streets
protesting facists declaring
emergency [military] law
steeds pulling the cart of
democracy
through thorn and thistle
along rocky cliffsides with
long falls if caught
slipping off the edge
I think of our own
[lawyers in the U.S.]
rats scurry to scavenge
behind ambulances and human misery
holed up inaction
eating their greedy cheese
I sing: I want to be
Richard Cory.
