Going for Coffee After Dropping the Fiancée Off at Work in Louisville

Oct 29, 2007 12:53

Automobiles on Interstate 64 appear
silhouettes in the rearview mirror
darkened shapes on a concrete horizon below the rising sun.
The driver
flicks the right turn signal
across the bridge at exit one, then
parks his blue Chevy downtown,
exiting,
stretches the morning
out of his muscles.

Clad in long underwear under
holy jeans and t-shirt
young man stands at four-way stop
across from coffee shop
smoking the last half of his Pall Mall.

Two drivers compete
signaling with dancing hands
the other’s right of way, the man
rolls the burning tip from his cigarette
slips the filter in his hip pocket

crossing the walk
declares the competition a tie.
The cars still idle he
enters the coffee shop doors the
sun continues to rise.
