My new favorite park (because it is close, fully fenced, uncrowded, and woody) Dane Park in Brookline near the Newton line, was were I took Charlie yet again this weekend.
The main change since the last time I was here is that a few trees have been felled and chipped.
A man I met on the way in complained that they leave too much deadwood. I didn't feel like arguing with him, but deadwood is good habitat. This mushroom-studded tree is soft enough for a chickadee or titmouse to make a nest cavity. The habitat of some well-to-do humans can be seen in the background.
I find myself starved for color. This
coral spot offers a tiny solace.
Dane park would be a good place for some lichenologist to study urban crustose lichens.
The front line of a crustose lichen battlefield.
This photo is bad, but it documents this strange lichen species. I'll try again on another visit.
