It was surprisingly warm today, so I took Charlie to Ward's Pond, despite the rain.
A soda bottle sailboat sat on the still, leaf-choked pond.
Charlie went swimming right away.
This is the stream leaving the pond, completely stuffed with oak leaves.
Charlie set about chewing a stick while I cleared some leaves from the stream.
Charlie actually had two stick projects going, and would work on the one closest to where I happened to be.
A little rainshower came, but it didn't bother us.
After a while the stream was running pretty well!
Unfortunately that caused the soda bottle sailboat to run aground on the rocks.
I picked it up and noticed it had a keel made of a file, and was held together with hot glue.
It fell apart after I handled it. I tried to set it back afloat in the pond, but it capsized.
While moving leaves out of the stream, I found lots of these guys!
I take them to be
amphipods; I see them a lot under seaweed on the beach, but was surprised to see them in a fresh water habitat.
Some rocks were balanced.
But Charlie gets bored of that. He wants me to throw rocks so he can swim!
Yay swimming! In November!
