I thought I'd have a whack at that "10 best albums" meme. It's not actually possible. Instead here's a list of favorite albums in the order that I acquired them. These are albums I'd have given a five star rating to when I first heard them, and would give a five star rating to today.
Prince Purple Rain
The Beatles White Album
Repo Man Soundtrack Album
Never mind the bollocks here's the Sex Pistols
The Clash
Public Image Limited album
Psychedelic Furs Talk Talk Talk
Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique
Public Enemy It takes a Nation of Millions to hold us back
Squeeze Singles
They Might Be Giants Apollo 18
Liz Phair Exile in Guyville
Nirvana Nevermind
Judgement Night Soundtrack Album
Propellerheads Decksanddrumsandrockandroll
Firewater The Ponzi Scheme
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong Ella and Louis
I know the white album doesn't make much sense--Revolver or Sgt. Peppers would be a better "best" Beatles album, but I have a sentimental attachment to it unlike their other albums. Likewise with Apollo 18--most people would say Flood, but I have memories associated with Apollo 18 that make it superior in my mind. I actually like In Utero better than Nevermind, but you can't hold anything back from Nevermind. This list looks so inadequate to me--I want to add all the missing parts (The Who, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Dead Kennedys, ad infinitum) but I have to stop somewhere. 17 items on a 10 best list is plenty.
