Mushroom Class: This weekend!

My second mushroom class at Drumlin Farm is this Saturday, in case anyone out there is interested!  There are still spaces available (the last one was "sold out" by this time).  It's a good way to spend a Saturday, and it's the best time of year to visit Drumlin Farm.  It's at its most picturesque, it's not too cold or too hot, not too mosquitoey, ( Read more... )

I'd love to go to that. Sadly I'm a couple of thosand miles too far away. I don't even like cooked mushrooms (I do eat them raw) but I still love being able to find free food.

It must feel like a bit of a big responsbility though, making sure no one poisons themselves.

I'm pretty clear on my "don'ts" and I point out the many pitfalls. (One of the rules is "never eat wild mushrooms raw.)

Finding edibles isn't my personal goal with mushrooming, though. I do try to give the class the tools they need to make their own identifications.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd love to go to this but I don't know if the timing will work out for me. The class description says that it's open to anyone over 16. Does that mean that it is closed to kids under 16 or just closed to unaccompanied under-16s?

It means that the class isn't geared toward people under 16. I try to use basic, non-scientific language, but I do teach with the assumption that the students have some understanding of (and interest in) biology. There was a seven year old in my last class--I'm not sure how much she got out of it (but she was a good student).
