Noticing the year: 01/12/08

We had ourselves a little adventure at the Quincy Seashore. There were many opportunities for noticing things and making discoveries along the beach and in the salt marsh. We found this tiny shark, which I can't identify because I didn't at the time know what field markings to look for. I did a little research and I think next time I'll have a chance. It's probably a spiny dogfish.

There are eight more photographs, including another dead thing that might be a little harder to look at than this well-picked over fish. Standard dead animal warning. (It's not that bad, but I thought you should know). There's also a panorama that might push the edges of your page around.

Maggie, Alexis, and Alex. In the background you can see the Wollaston Yacht Club (the shack on stilts), the Boston skyline (which looks tiny even though it's the next city to the north) a bit of the Squantum neighborhood, and the harbor islands.

Wollaston Beach is nice enough, but despite it being in the high 40's, the wind whipped through us pretty well. Plus there were a lot of other dogs, which we try to avoid. So we went and found an accessible part of a nearby salt marsh, which was much more interesting.

This doorless old safe was the first thing we found. Cool!

This unfortunate fellow is hard to recognize, but his size and remaining hair tips him off as a raccoon.

Dentition is a good clue, too.

A sign marks the place as someone's turf.

Your guess is as good as mine.

We had all our dogs, and in the sky the conditions were right for a little sun dog.

Alexis' photos of the beach are here.
