Parade of Mediocrity

We've watched a bunch of movies this weekend, none of which were all that good. I think I liked these all a little more than Alexis did, but they all stay around 3 stars for me. I didn't waste my time with long reviews, so here are three short ones:

Pitch Black
It's a bad sign when Vin Diesel is the best thing about a movie. But in Pitch Black he was surrounded by actors without charisma and science without logic, and action without excitement.

The White Diamond
Werner Herzog is a most distractible documentarian, and when his subject--usually a doomed visionary--bores him he wanders off on irrelevant tangents. Fortunately, in White Diamond, the tangents are as charming, if not illuminating, as his main subject.

A Scanner Darkly
A Scanner Darkly is a story behind of its time. Written in the Nixon era, the tyrannical drug war and pervasive surveillance it depicts are old hat these days. Robert Downey jr is fun, as always, but like all the main actors, he's about 25 years too old for the part, a fact they didn't even try to conceal with rotoscope.
