Nice shots. I really like your Dad's shot; your's has a good clear shot of the bird, but I like your dad's composition :)
We have occasional cardinal accidentals here, but I can count the confirmed sightings that I've heard of on one hand. I did see a few when I was in Texas though. Interesting bird, but basically like watching grossbeaks.
It's kinda funny, but both cardinals (maybe they're the same individual?) were in the same tree when they were photographed. The one urbpan's dad took was taken from in our living room and the one I took was taken from outside on the sidewalk.
Every evening just before sunset the cardinals begin making chipping noises here. At the feeder I may see up to 4 on any given day. The winter here, I'm not sure if they nest here.
There is such a delight in seeing that flash of red or orange. I think I like the females best.
Not just Texas -- Northern Cardinal ranges west to central Arizona, and can be found in the outer areas of the Phoenix metropolitan area (primarily in riparian habitat). The subspecies here is slightly smaller, has a slightly darker red body, and a proportionally larger crest. They are significantly different from the Pyrrhuloxia (which is at its northern range limit here).

We have two flowering dogwoods in our front yard (both cardinal pictures were taken in our front yard). I'm gonna wait until they flower.
