Ward's pond, often featured here and at
cottonmanifesto's journal, is tucked away in Olmsted Park, a linear stretch of green between major roads in Boston and Brookline. It's hard to believe this tranquil pond is just a few steps from the roar of traffic on the Jamaicaway.
Ward's pont is fed by the overflow from spring-fed Jamaica Pond, a heavily visited and landscaped pond upstream. A swampy area marks where the water comes in, and a boardwalk has been built over it--to protect park visitors from the marshy area and vice versa. There is always green here, even on days 30 degrees colder than this one. I haven't determined what species these plants are, that thrive in the icewater here.
Overflow from Ward's pond (here rushing from the flow of melting ice) becomes a clear brook that slows downstream to become the Muddy River.
