Purity, Imagination, and Horror

I watched a German movie called The White Ribbon a couple nights ago. I wouldn't recommend it, even though there were some interesting bits, because it's pretty draggy in most places and quite random. I get that the film is saying "terrorism and war is caused by petty crap like this," but I wish they'd said that a little quicker and more coherently.

Also saw The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which was pretty incoherent as well, but that may be because of the death of Heath Ledger early on. Why Gilliam didn't just recast a new actor in the roll and reshoot, I don't know, but then the only thing with Heath Ledger in it that I really liked was Roar. The fantasy sequences are well done, though, as is typical in Gilliam movies; I'd rank it between The Brothers Grimm (bottom of the pile of Gilliam films I've seen) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, so if you dislike the latter, you probably won't like Imagninarium, and if you like The Brothers Grimm, you'll probably love it.

I'm about midway through Legion right now, which I can already tell is at least as draggy as The White Ribbon and is also not really anything special. Basically, a grimmer version of The Prophecy with a Night of the Living Dead vibe. Some interesting visuals, but not as good as The Prophecy.
