-   A German friend (Chris) will be here on business at the end of this month and we are going to spend the 27th hanging out..  I met him on the Spanish Steps in Rome probably 20 years ago.  He was about 19 at the time, traveling with a group of students from Germany, I was traveling alone, and they struck up a conversation.  We talked for quite a ( Read more... )

I know! A lot of these people militia people in the armed takeover of the Oregon refuge were Mormons with 8 to 10 (plus) kids and I think they were home-schooled. Not big on that concept. Besides the lack of human interaction with others their age, they are sheltered from the "real world" and only know what their parents teach them in terms of what the outside world is like.

Unfortunately one of the militia guys was killed when he tried to run a police roadblock and then reached for a gun. There are lots of pictures of him at the refuge where he was carrying two guns and a rifle, and he's on a youtube video stating he wouldn't be taken alive, but the militia conspiracy theory nuts are saying the he was shot in cold blood while he was trying to surrender with his hands up and that the gun they found on him was planted.

He had 11 kids and a small ranch with 100 head of cattle, but it came out that the ranch made no money. His main source of income was taking in tons of foster kids. He got over $100K one year from the government for that, and then had the kids work on on the ranch. So he gets paid 6-figures from the government he hates and then uses the kids for slave labor, teaching him his crazy views. Jeesh!

As for the people on the message board, I don't know what their excuse is. The most "out there" ones are from "guns and God" areas like Texas, Nebraska, and Kentucky where they live in the sticks, also somewhat isolated. The stuff they say about ALL gays and Muslims boggle my mind, but being a super-moderator, I can't let my personal opinions taint how I moderate, so I put up with a lot. But I always thought people with their views were the fringe few. I'm learning there are a lot more out there than I realized, and posting anonymously on a message board probably allows them to express those views more than they do in person with others. Kind of scary.

Yes, Kasich seems the most sane out of the Rs, but I'm not sure that's saying much. LOL.
