A friend of mine asked me to give her a Netflix rec, so I figured I'd post it here as well. One of the funniest movies I've seen in the past 10 years is the British comedy "In The Loop," which is based on the foul-mouthed (or should I just say Scottish?) political adviser Malcolm Tucker from the television comedy "In the Thick of It." I've never seen the series (although I just ordered it as a belated Father's Day gift for my husband), but the movie is phenomenal. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay, and while it didn't win, it's brilliant.
Those who like political humor (half of it takes place in Washington D.C., and the other half in London) *have* to see it. The cast includes James Gandolfini as a dovish general, Tom Hollander as a clueless British minister, Gina McKee as his press secretary, and the amazing Peter Capaldi as the swearing Scotsman.
Some of my many favorite lines, which I realize don't mean anything out of context, but they do indicate what geniuses the writers are:
"I cannot stand to see a woman bleed from the mouth. It reminds me of country and western music, which I cannot abide. That stuff is just choking the airwaves."
"Are you saying that you shagged a woman for the good of peace in Iraq?"
"'Climbing the mountain of conflict'? You sounded like a Nazi Julie Andrews!"
"Tobes, I don't want to have to read you the riot act but I am going to have to read you some extracts from the riot act, like section one, paragraph one: don't leave your boss twisting in the wind and then burst in late, smelling like a pissed seaside donkey."
"You're like the woman from 'The Omen.' You've given birth to a demon, and now it's gonna kill you."
and for the fandom friends:
"Hey, you! Ron Weasley, you do it."
