haters gonna hate. williamsburg is great if you want to visit an accurate representation of the village candlestickmaker, i guess.
i put most of this on twitter (@petecartwright) butttt...
Black Sheep on Marshall, behind VCU is really exceptional. http://www.theblacksheeprva.com/menus.htm Velocity Comics is a pretty solid comic shop. Most of the other ones I've been to in town are the kind of creepy, overstuffed, huge-stacks-of-70's-porn uncomfortable comic shops, but Velocity is excellent.
8 1/2 on Strawberry st has my 2nd favorite sandwich in town, the mozzarella/arugula. It's the only one I've had, but other people say their other stuff is good. their bread is just.. jesus it's good.
Copollas (downtown on Main, on Carytown on Cary) has the Cheese Columbo. it's a seared/melted cheese mix with artichoke hearts and peppers/onions, and shit is to die for.
the Poe Museum is OK, but short on both content and much of a real connection to richmond (spoiler alert - poe only lived in richmond for a little bit and whoops turns out he's kind of a prick)
The Byrd Theatre in Carytown is an AMAZINGLY well-preserved old movie house that shows 2nd run movies. On Saturday an enormous organ rises from under the stage and this guy plays it for a solid 15 minutes. it's impressive.
Don't go to Short Pump, it's a bleak development/suburb/bigbox wasteland. I'd recommend against Bottom's Up for pizza unless you really love super oily deeeeeeep dish.
that's all off the top of my head. call my cell if you need more recommendations. i think you have the number?
also, millionthing Kuba Kuba, especially the Huevos Rancheros, especially ESPECIALLY the tres leches cake. it's made by the owner's ancient cuban mom and is fantastic.
Oh, and the Museum of the Confederacy near the hospital was really interesting, I thought. Not as "gung ho, The South!" as i assumed it would be, but it was really interesting seeing The Civil War from a non-Northern perspective.
If you go out of town a little bit, Pho 79 on Staples Mill rd has some great tofu bun (B5 on the menu). Mekong on broad has some pretty ok-to-good vietnamese/general asian food and a really impressive beer menu. this place (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tay-do-coffee-and-sandwich-shop-richmond) is GREAT and hidden/hard to find. worth it.
