I can't comment on your LiveJournal review because I'm not a member, but I wanted to say thanks for the most incisive, insightful, and well-considered review of ARIEL I've read. I long ago accepted that most readers (and even the majority of critics) read almost entirely at the level of event, and don't step back to see what kind of picture the mosaic tiles of detail and theme attempt to form. That you absolutely nailed it by writing "the longer one holds on to a fantasy (literally in this book in the form of Ariel), the harder it is to grow up and see/experience the world as it really is" is very gratifying.

The person who wrote ELEGY BEACH is aware of many of the things you mention, and took them into consideration (though not necessarily consciously) during its creation. I would definitely be curious about (and flattered by) your reaction to that book as well.
