The Android's Dream by John Scalzi
7/10

The Android's Dream is the most entertaining of Scalzi's books that I've read. It reminds me of The Hitchhiker's Guide, but I couldn't really tell you why. There's lots of bits that seemed to have materialized onto the page out of Scalzi's brain without any prior plausibility. There is no means to the ends that exist in the world he builds. Things are just the way they are, and they're kind of strange. I like that.

Other Things I Like:
The fake religion that everyone knows is fake but practices anyway
The hero's job title: Bearer of Bad News, and the fact that he's very, very good at it.
Farting insults at an alien

Things I Didn't Like:
Not really all that substantial
Pacing is off in the middle of the book (but it's better in the beginning and the end)
Using "Jean" as a male name and not figuring it out until the last 50 pages of the book

tl;dr: If you like fart jokes, read the first couple of chapters. Even though there's only one (it's a damn good one though), you'll probably end up reading the rest of the book anyway.
