So I've taken a break from bjj. I hurt my rib by having a 200lb. guy sit on my chest doing mount drills all session. I thought it would get better by next session, but when I caught a shoulder RIGHT in the tender spot from a guy passing my guard, I squeaked very loudly (which sounds contrarian, but believe me, it happened) and almost passed out from the pain. I then decided to take some time off.
One trip to Vegas and an additional week off, I returned.
Yesterday we practiced doing scissor sweeps, which are kind of like upas, only your opponent is in your guard. I'll explain more about basic moves in a future post. I'm still trying to figure out how to do pictures for them.
I was completely worn out like usual, but I actually made it through the entire practice. I think this was due to focusing more on technique and less on using strength to pull off moves. I passed guard on a few guys, then got submitted about ten times by a blue belt when he and I were the only people left with enough energy to roll. But I did get his back once. Then he flipped me over and slapped on an arm bar. Sigh.
I'm also seriously thinking about training MMA instead of straight BJJ over at AMC Pankration in Kirkland. The owner, Matt Hume, trains world class athletes like Mach Sakurai, Ivan Salaverry, and Josh Barnett, so it would definitely be worth it. I have this sudden urge to be a professional fighter. Scary.
