Here's a little glossary to get you started. If I use any terms that aren't in this list in a future post, I'll probably define them there.
gi - the thing you wear. if you've ever seen anyone in a karate uniform, you've seen someone wearing a gi.
mount position - the most dominant attack position you can attain. in this position, you're basically sitting on your opponent's chest or stomach.
guard position - your best defensive position. in the guard, you're laying on your back and your opponent is in between your legs with his hips on your thighs. kinda looks like they're doin' you. a closed guard is when your legs are locked behind your opponent's back. this is to keep them from escaping and to keep their body close to yours so they cannot strike you or create enough distance to choke you or get you in another hold. this is better than an open guard, where your legs are open and your opponent can move freely in the vertical range.
half-guard - this position is similar to the guard, except you are trapping one of your opponent's legs with yours instead of both.
side mount or side control - in this position, your body is perpendicular to your opponent's and you are on top. it is an advantageous attack position.
that's all I can really think of for now. everything else is either a move or not very common.
