Special delivery...

This actually happened last year, so if you're a friend of my personal journal, you've probably seen it before, but I just ran across it again and thought it would fit here, too.

We had an alligator lizard in our mailbox the other day. We have a very small mail slot, and the mail carrier are constantly trying to shove magazines and large envelopes through it, whereupon they get completely shredded and wrecked. So we keep a small cardboard box on the porch to put stuff like that in. Imagine my suprise when I opened the door and saw someone had delivered an alligator lizard!

Whether it was my cat or he climbed in there himself and had trouble getting out, I don't know. He gave me a pretty suspiscious glare as I tried to focus on him. Then I let him go in the backyard.

Afterwards, my six-year-old came running up to me after perusing his lizard book.

"Mom, I know what that lizard was, it wasn't an alligator lizard," he tells me earnestly. "It was a blue-tongued SKANK!"

He couldn't figure out why I started giggling and had a hard time stopping.
