The low rumble of coffee beans would be barely audible in a local shop such as the Bistre Cafe, but to Haruki, no other music sounded better than beans being ground in a coffeemaker.
Leaning back and waiting for the beans to finish grinding, the girl took in a deep whiff of the espresso brewing at the other end and closed her eyes with a smile. The aroma of coffee had become like a staple fragrance to her; its smell was something she had loved for as long as she could remember, and the reason why she had always wanted to work in a coffee shop like this.
The door chimes rustled as she opened her eyes again. At half past three on a Wednesday afternoon, the shop would be teeming with customers who wanted to grab a cup for coffee break, or those who simply wanted to unwind with conversation or a good book. The establishment had served countless cups for the last six years, and Haruki was proud to have landed a job at one of the most respectable coffee shops downtown. For the last half-year she worked here she met people from different walks of life. She believed that every person could be gauged in the kind of coffee he preferred. A caffè latte for the laid-back individual, cappuccino for the driven, a macchiato for the well-rounded, or a sweet ice blend for the passionate. Coffee was universal that way, and it was a little philosophy she had come to acquire since she had started working here.
"Hey, Haruki-chan."
The girl turned around. It was Kei, the artist, dropping by for his cup for the day as he leaned his elbows by the cashier with a smile. "You know the usual."
"Espresso macchiato, got it," she grinned, kicking herself off the table. As she began to prepare the drink she could still feel his eyes on her as she momentarily turned around and raised her eyebrows.
"You getting back to work soon?" she asked. The man shrugged with a sigh.
"Unfortunately," he smirked. "I have another painting to finish in three days."
"Well, good luck with that," she smiled, handing him his drink a few moments later.
"Don't forget, my exhibit," he winked as the cashier gave him his change. "You promised you'd come."
"I will, don't worry," she laughed as he turned on his heel. He waved at her by the doorway with a smile before leaving.
"Ne, Haruki-chan," Suzume, one of her co-workers, came up to her and tapped her on the shoulder. "The guy with the laptop. The one who ordered long black. Were you the one who gave it to him?"
"Oh," Haruki blinked as she noticed the dark-haired man by the window, sipping on his cup as he sat in front of his laptop, reading his work through unframed eyeglasses. "You mean Ryou-san? Yeah, why?"
"Ohh, you know him?" The girl squealed beside her in a whisper. "Is that his name? He's really cute! Is he a regular here?"
"Yeah, he drops by here often," she said. "Your type?"
"Very much," Her friend giggled. "The other guy who just left was pretty hot too. How much do you know about Ryou-san? Tell me more about him!"
"Nothing much," she shrugged. "He's a budding writer. Writes mystery novels. He gave me a copy one time. He's pretty good."
"Really? That's so cool," Suzume dreamily sighed. The door chimes rattled again. "Introduce me to him sometime!"
"Get back to work," Haruki laughed, shaking her head as the girl returned to her place with a giggle. A tall man then stood before the counter, looking at all the pastry on display as his girlfriend walked to the other side of the shop to get a chair.
"I suggest raspberry cream," she offered him. "It goes well with your caramel ice."
"You think so?" The man pursed his lips, unable to decide. "Man, they all look so delicious, but I'll go with that raspberry of yours."
Haruki nodded with a grin. "And your girlfriend will have?"
"I don't know, what do you suggest?" Shin murmured, looking at the menu above him in thought. "You know I'm not good with these kinds of things."
"She might like mocha," she mused, looking at the girl at the other end of the shop who was busy fiddling with her cellphone. "Ice. She doesn't like hot drinks, does she?"
"She doesn't even drink coffee," he snorted.
"Like you," she daintily smiled. "Mocha ice then. Will she also be having cake?"
"No," Shin took his wallet from the back of his jeans and began paying at the cashier. "She's on a diet."
"You should try coffee too sometime," she smiled as she took a slice of raspberry cream cake and put it on a small plate. "A café chocolat, for starters."
"You know I'm a sweet tooth," he muttered with a smirk.
"Change is good," she laughed as Shin picked up his tray and left.
Suzume appeared behind her once more, a cup and saucer in her hands. "English vanilla for the guy with the book."
"Oh," Haruki blinked, placing the cup on a small tray as her eyes searched and spotted the young, brown-haired man reading a book by the sofa. Approaching him, she gingerly placed his order on the table in front of him.
"English vanilla latte," she said, faintly grinning. "At our fourth book this week, aren't we, Yuuichi-san?"
The man named Yuuichi looked up and smiled at her in return. "I know. I can't help it."
"Enjoy your drink then," she curtly bowed with another smile and made her way back to the counter.
The door chimes rustled again. Haruki brought the tray to her chest and smiled to herself once more. The grounding of beans in that coffeemaker would probably be unheard to anyone but her, but even the laughter, the conversation, and the tinkering of cups was all a part of the music that made coffee probably the best thing that ever happened to her.
