Summary: Rukia gets a scolding and Yoruichi returns only to have to pick up a pair of broken hearts. Will she be up to the task?
When Rukia left school that afternoon she was waving with a smile at the girls as they parted ways only to have that smile quickly fade at the looks she was receiving from Ichigo and Orihime. Something had gone wrong. “Rukia, we need to talk.” Ichigo said in a voice that gave away how completely upset he was. He turned, walking down the street with his backpack over his shoulder and the girls both followed him silently until he had led them to a slightly empty park, setting the backpack on a picnic table as he began to pace. Orihime sat down and stared at her own lap with a look of mixed emotions and Rukia leaned against the table, face twitching as she attempted to hold a smile.
“Things didn’t go well?” She asked… it was all a joke, right? They were probably playing a prank on her. Ichigo stopped pacing, arms coming up in a motion to reach over and wrap his hands around the girl’s slender neck before he let out a sigh and allowed them to fall to his side. Rukia got the message and sat, looking out onto the park and frowning. “I only wanted to help.” She said in a small and helpless tone but when Orihime let out an audible sob at this, hand coming up to cup her own mouth, Rukia knew things were much worse than she expected.
“I’m not sure how this will work out, Rukia.” Ichigo began, starting to pace once more. “First of all, you knew it wasn’t any of your business. What does it matter to you if they’re dating or not! Then… well you may have just gone and screwed it up for the both of them! Ishida is probably off somewhere thinking about how he can further distance himself from Urahara, that stupid idiot, and well… Urahara isn’t doing well at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if the shop stays closed for a month.”
Rukia swallowed and bit her lip before replying. “I’ll apologize. I only thought that…”
“We know what you thought, Rukia. Anyone with half a brain cell would understand that you thought that they were just keeping it a secret and trying to give them an out.” He ground his teeth together and forcefully sat across from the women, laying his head across the table. “Nobody would have guessed that they’d…” His face soured as he decided not to take that route. “Look, Rukia… nobody is angry with you for wanting to help. Just mind your own business for a while.”
She gave a nod of understanding and they both fell into silence, the sound of Orihimes muffled crying being the only reminder that the conversation had happened.
“It was not. It was not. It was not.” He said it over and over again like a mantra as he rushed down the streets on his way home. As he opened the door and swung it closed he let out a small scream and threw his things to the floor. “It was…” Ishida slumped, falling down into a heap on the ground as his arms came up, hands covering his head. His lip quivered and he tried his best to remain focused as a growing pain in his chest erupted. “..it was not… a date.” He couldn’t allow himself to reconsider. It either was or it wasn’t and he was determined that he had not gone on a date with Urahara - especially not if those like Kurosaki knew of it. Would it change your mind if they didn’t know? that annoying voice in his conscious asked with a teasing tone and he groaned, leaning forward some more and shaking his head vigorously. “No!” He screamed at himself as loudly as he could but it did nothing to relieve the stab that tightened near his heart. Then why are you crying? The voice asked again, this time with a smug but gentle tone that reminded him of someone he couldn’t quite place. Eyes opening wide he stilled and sniffed, reaching down with a shaky left hand to feel the trails of tears that were sliding down his face.
Urahara laughed loudly and stumbled down the hall, running his right shoulder into a wall and slightly going off balance. Ururu stuck her head out of a doorway and looked at him before going back into the room. Shortly afterwards Tessai emerged and stared at the manager who was currently leaned against the wall and giggling like a schoolgirl as he tried to steady his cup for another drop of liquor. He seemed to find it amusing that he couldn’t quite get the bottle to remain stable long enough in order to get the liquid to pour into the intended container and had dribbled little bits of the liquid onto the floor. The large man considered what he should do and moved towards Urahara only to stop at the sound of a commanding female voice. “What in the name of Soul Society is going on in here?!” A giggle that turned into a snort escaped from Urahara and he blushed, eyes going wide and hand coming up to cover his face, but it only made him laugh all the more. Yoruichi stepped forward and took the cup and bottle from him, handing them to Tessai without looking at him and he took them, leaving the woman with the shopkeeper. She sighed, hand coming up to rub at her forehead and eyes rolling up as she thought over what she was seeing. “You’re completely drunk.”
“I know~♥!” Urahara said and he tried to lean forward towards Yoruichi but only managed to stumble slightly before she reached out and grasped him under both arms, hefting him down the hall to his room and tossing him onto his futon. “Oooh! Yoruichi is so forward~! I like that!” Urahara cooed and he began to giggle again. The violet haired woman gave another sigh and leaned against the door frame. Something had happened between him and Ishida was all that she could guess as to the reason for Urahara to drink himself into a stupor.
“So what did you do?”
Urahara stilled and looked up at her with a goofy smile, laying his head against his pillow before replying. “Whatever do you mean my sweet Yoruichi? I did nothing! You are the one who threw me onto the bed suggestively~!” She fought the urge to roll her eyes again and decided to ask more detailed questions. After all, since he could still say “suggestively” then he must not be that drunk.
“What happened between you and Ishida?” The blonde stopped everything, face contorting into one of a mixture of anger and pain before he turned around and stared away.
“Nothing.”
Yoruichi was shocked. He had sobered up rather quickly just at the mention of Ishida. Something very disturbing must have happened. She crossed her arms and thought over what she should say next, deciding to ask her original question again. “So what did you do?”
Urahara erupted at this point, standing and turning to point a finger at her with a glare. “Don’t just assume that I was the one who did anything! I gave it all! If I am guilty of anything it is that. I should have known never to trust my emotions. They only get a person in trouble.” At this he turned away, sliding down onto his mattress again. “Now…” His voice was gentle again, showing no hint of the anger he had just moments ago. “If you don’t mind, Yoruichi, I’m rather tired~!” She nodded and left, knowing what had to be done at this point. Tessai stood in the doorway with a concerned look on his face and she gave him a smile as she passed and left the shop. Urahara would be all right. She would see to that.
When she arrived at the boy’s apartment it was already getting dark but she figured it wouldn’t matter. He wasn’t going to be happy when she was finished with him. Reaching up with a right fist she banged against the door. “Ishida! Open up! We need to talk!” The sound of someone shuffling and a sniff could be heard close to the door on the other side. She frowned and as the door opened gasped at the sight before her. Ishida was slumped against the door frame, holding the door open slightly and staring at her with empty eyes that were bloodshot. His face was slightly yellow and his brow was covered in sweat… his cheeks stained with tears that he had tried to wipe away. The usually conformed hairs on his head were scattered wildly and his glasses were nowhere in sight. He was an absolute mess… this would be more work than she thought.
