I think one of the major problems with the game industry today is old franchises.
Disclaimer, this is a generalization. Suck it for anyone who can't stand any form of generalization in the least. Suck it long, and suck it hard.
Back to the topic.
I've been hearing a bunch of people bitching, moaning, and complaining about the lack of creativity and gameplay in video games in the last few years. They go on and on about how things are just rehashes of older games, or that people focus too much on graphics, or too little on graphics, blah blah blah. The real problem with video games of late is none of these things, but the fact that the old grandpa franchises of the past just cling on and keep going.
I'm going to blaspheme here. Mario, Link, Final Fantasy, and Sonic have to die. Stop making these games! No one is going to pour their heart and soul into a new simple platform game if they're going up against Mario. Not going to happen. It tried to happen a few times, you have Banjo Kazooie, Jak and Daxter, even Psychonauts. All of which were pretty damn awesome and fun games, but then what happens? Uh oh here comes Mario, or Donkey Kong, or Sonic.
People obsess too much over these old, tired, and dated franchises.
It's not just in the platform realm, either. How many times have you heard of a new World War II first person shooter coming out? Wait, it's been a couple seconds since I've started this post, so a new one must have been announced! Madden 1985-20xx Hey need a new Madden every year!
I understand that these franchises are more of a brand then a story and character nowadays, but I have to say I'm disappointed in Miyamoto for not thinking up anything new. Maybe it's not even him, and it's Corporate HQ. In which case, sorry man.
I also find it amusing as all hell to find the same people bitching about lack of originality and creativity to be the same people that will go out and get the new game of an old franchise with a weak spin on something new in the game. You fucking hypocrits! What really gets me, is the stories aren't getting any better with these games either. It's pretty much formula writing on the plots, for those that have them.
I think we'd see a lot more games come out if the old guard would pass the fucking torch already! I mean, give me a break! Super Mario Galaxy 2?! A sequel to the 50+ games in the Mario catelog?! Fuck you Nintendo. Fuck. You. Ever been to a meeting at Square Enix about a new game?
"Hey I've got an idea for a new console RPG, it's about a boy who--"
"Good. We'll stick Final Fantasy on it, throw the next number on the end and call it a smash hit!"
Prove me wrong. Those that are watching me, prove me wrong. Show me something creative that the long standing franchises have done to make things better for gaming. I'm dying to be wrong here.
End rant.
