[It's the onis that do it.]

[Quite frankly, Gai might have missed this call for a couple more hours, if it weren't for them. Once he had finally left off with Sakura and Minato, he had decided to head home and relax; he hadn't expected an oni to come flying out of nowhere and snatch the Hitomi straight out of his hand. He could hear odd rustling noises that suggested a few were probably scattering his clothes all over the bedroom--again--and so he groaned in exasperation and gave chase.]

[The thing was making irritating screeching giggles as it flew, and Gai finally reclaimed his Hitomi with an athletic leap, sitting down to see what it had done to the thing; it looked as though it had only gotten to the network through random button clutching.]

[By the time he actually starts paying attention to what's happening on the screen, Kakashi is in mid-fall, and he gapes for a moment, before hastily replaying the post. How could he--what had--this wasn't right! A jounin did not just fall out of a tree lie that. Not unless something made him do so. Something was wrong, and he didn't see any injuries on the man, either. Was there an enemy? He hits the button to reply immediately.]

Kakashi! What happened? Are you alright?

[ Well, I'm dying, Kakashi thinks he should say, but the last time he talked to Gai was an hour ago and they were supposed to rendezvous to retrieve their Hokage. An hour ago and Kakashi hasn't checked in yet and maybe now is the best time to do this. He hopes they're back in Konoha. Hopes Minato is safe.

Trusts that he is.

Because he has to be. ]

Yondaime-sama. Did you secure him?

[ The words are almost forced out a little too carefully. Their delivery all tight.

This is all that matters, in the end.

He almost wants to retch when the poison -- he's sure it's poison now, it can't be anything else but poison -- works its way through his stomach and tries to push its way up, prickling his throat. Swallowing against it only makes it worse. ]

[Gai doesn't like this. He doesn't like the fact that Kakashi is suddenly responding with only voice instead of video. He doesn't like the tight, choked, restrained way each word is so carefully spoken. He doesn't like the fact that Kakashi hadn't met up with them, or called them, or did anything even remotely close to what he had said he would do--it surely pointed to some sort of trouble, all around.]

Yondaime-sama is safe in Konoha. Kakashi, what happened? Were you attacked?

[ Safe.

Kakashi is relieved to hear this. But safe doesn't mean that he's okay. You can be safe and dead, or on the verge of death, but that isn't okay. And he knows Minato is in the best hands he can be in, short of Godaime-sama's, but that doesn't stop him from ignoring Gai's questions and asking: ]

Is he okay?

[ Minato's life has always meant more than his own. ]

He's okay. He'll make a full recovery. Are you okay? Where are you?

[He understands why Kakashi is doing this. Honestly, he does. This is his sensei, after all. And his Hokage. But that still doesn't make this any less frustrating. Minato is fine, and safe, and they know very well that he's in good hands. Kakashi's situation is an entirely unknown thing, and he needs to start talking, now.]

[ It's too late.

Kakashi can feel it shaking through him and it's cold, god it's cold, and his breath is clicking in his lungs. A shaky thing, like a rattlesnake's gotten in there and made his chest a home. The world is a great spinning thing and he is floating. Dying, too, he thinks, and it's almost comical.

Not many men can say they've died three times.

He wonders if it'll be his last.

The video clicks on.

Kakashi thinks he should smile. He tells himself to smile but it doesn't reach his eye. ]

I think I'm dying, Gai.

[ He admits.

It's a strange thing to say. He never thought it'd be quite like this. ]

Poison.

[ Feels like it, anyway. Can't be anything else. Snuck up on him so fast, and then he was down on the ground. He'd been getting sick, but this--

This came out of nowhere and knocked him down and his chakra is forming knots inside of him. It feels like it wants to come out, too. ]

Dying?! Poison?!

[Oh yes, Gai is alarmed. Gai is alarmed, and worried, and upset, and.... he doesn't even know. This couldn't be happening! They hadn't been attacked at all on the way there or back! Or while treating the worst wounds! What was going on here?]

Kakashi, where are you? How were you attacked? Are you in danger right now?

[Kakashi looks like absolute shit right now; Gai can only imagine that he must feel even worse. He's already jumping up to go head out the door and rescue his comrade--again.]

[ The forest is huge. There's no way Gai can find him.

A leaf lost in a forest. How very apt.

Kakashi sighs, and it seems to go all the way through him in quakes that rise up to the surface. At least the spasms have stopped for the time being, leaving a dull, heavy ache where they had been before. ]

I'm not sure...

[ He says quietly. And he thinks Gai needs to stay in Konoha. Protect the Hokage. ]

You shouldn't come, Gai. Yondaime-sama...

[ Another wave of nausea hits him and his eye closes. Breath shudders. ]

Yondaime-sama needs you.

No. [Gai is insistent. Already, he's closing his door behind him, turning to start heading in the direction he had come from. The forest was huge, but his determination was bigger, and his need to find kakashi would surely trump anything so trivial as odds or probability. It had to.]

Yondaime-sama is fine, Kakashi. He has Sakura--I have faith in your student. She and the rest of Konoha will keep him safe and protected and taken care of while I'm gone. Right now, you need me.

It's too late, Gai.

[ So softly it's almost a whisper.

There's a fuzz that's pressing in all around the edges of his vision, and things are getting more blurry. Sunlight dapples through the leaves and it's almost blinding. He has to look away from it.

The Hitomi is trembling. ]

Why did you pick me, anyway...?

[ To be a rival.

Of all things to ask, this is what he's asking now. Just pops out. ]

It's never too late, Kakashi.

[Never. Never never never. Because he believes. He believes that things will be alright. Things will work out. They have to. Kakashi can't die like this--not alone. Not again. Gai has to be there. He will be there, if it kills him. He won't let the same mistake happen twice. He won't fail him this time.]

[It's a strange question to ask while you're dying, he thinks. It must be important to Kakashi. And so Gai's mind whirls for an answer, something short and evocative of his feelings, anything he can say simply.... And he had only just opened his mouth and started to speak when something small, brown, and furry slammed hard into his face. Gai was knocked solidly to the ground, gagging on a paw as tiny claws scraped against his tongue. The thing goes tumbling soon after, and Gai's vision clears in time to see floppy ears and a stubby tail, a flash of an adorably wrinkled pug face. What was Pakkun doing here?]

[ Pakkun is clearly not very happy to have been knocked into the big green giant's face and is scowling as he rights himself up and brushes himself off, then runs over to Gai. ]

Oi! You should watch where you're goin'! It's rude to run into summons!

[ He chastises very unhappily, then goes right on. ]

Anyway, Kakashi needs your help! And prolly Cherry Blossom's too! I think he's sick. He fell right outta a tree... Doesn't smell right either. The rest o' the pack's coverin' him up cuz he can't keep warm even in this weather!

Sorry, but I was in a hurry.

[It's the best apology that Gai can give right now, and so Gai simply dusts himself off and spits out some dog hair as he stands, listening to what Pakkun tells him.]

I'll let her know en route; you'll have to lead the way. What can you tell me about how he smells?

[A dog should know better than a person whether Kakashi is sick or poisoned, Gai knows--he has never really had access to the power of scent the way Kakashi or the Inuzukas do. Pakkun will be able to explain this better than anyone else could, especially since he was there with Kakashi; Gai is already starting to contact Sakura on his Hitomi as he moves to follow.]

[ Pakkun is already moving, darting around and starting to leap towards the trees. ]

He smells real sick.

[ The pug easily explains, the wrinkles of his face even more wrinkled with how worry he is. ]

Whatever he's got, it's real bad. Never seen him like this before.

[ Kakashi rarely ever got sick. And when he did, it was never anything that was too debilitating. An occasional cough or headcold was about the extent of illness in his medical history. ]

We'll have to get him back to the village as soon as possible then, once Sakura says he's healthy enough to be moved....

[If she can treat him out here. If not.... Well, they would just have to take their chances with the return trip. He hoped not, at least.]
