Old news: lj is dead. Everyone is crazy busy, or they have other reasons not to be here. No one has time to read those huge meta posts we used to write once upon a time. But maybe we can all find ten minutes to do this:

Any fandom, pick daemons for the characters and explain your choices (in His Dark Materials, characters' souls take animal form)

I've done TVD for this and actually spend far too much of my time thinking about daemons in the TVD verse, especially how vampires and their daemons behave. (here's a tumblr post: (http://kirkwoodisinoregon.tumblr.com/post/49033134309/hi-i-just-wanna-say-that-youve-inspired-me-to-read) and then i've written elejah fic actually for them with daemons (http://archiveofourown.org/works/817367... )

Ah, I read your fic! :D I love anything written with daemons, and that was lovely.

I've thought about daemons in TVD as well and had some different ideas: I imagine that vampires wouldn't have daemons because they do literally die, so their daemon vanishes. It's a much more cruel and overt way of showing that vampires are lacking a part of themselves somehow, so it makes more sense that they would mourn their humanity.

Ahh thank you! i'm glad you liked it.

See I've wondered about that too! That was actually my original thought for vampires, that you just lost your daemon. And imagine the brutal awakening that would be, to lose part of yourself and you can never get it back. And having to look at others and seeing them with their daemons. That alone makes me want to cry.

But then I thought that would make it harder for any vampire to be out in public? Because they would instantly be known as being "bad" or "wrong" without a daemon.

Right. And I think that would go hand-in-hand with vampires being unable to walk in the sun, so they're creatures of the night, unable to show themselves in public. But they can also compel animals. Hence: Damon's crow is his fake daemon. Stefan would have a hawk. And all the other vampires that walk in daylight and keep human company would do the same: compel animals to act as their daemons. If they kept hidden or aloof enough, they could go unnoticed.

You can probably tell, but I have half-written fic snippets of this somewhere. I've just never posted it.

Now that is amazing and ohhh I like the idea of that so much. I never ever thought of that and now I love it. They could indeed if they played it right and were smart on it. And that fits in with not a lot of vampires being able to walk in the daylight.

I would love to read any of those snippets if you ever wanted to post them to share.

I keep meaning to go back to it. Here's a bit:

They stare at each other: the girl with her daemon at her breast, hearts beating together; and the vampire, cold and alone.

“How?” Elena whispers. “How do we look exactly alike?”

But Katherine's eyes have turned to her daemon and she moves like silk to ghost a finger over smooth fur, and Elena shivers: she feels that touch. The cat's ears have flattened; he presses himself further against Elena, taking refuge in warm skin, a living heartbeat, and she clutches him tight.

“We have the same soul,” Katherine intones in her ear.

Barbara Gordon's is an owl - a masked owl, specifically. A silent predator, a night flier, a symbol of wisdom. Their sight pierces distance and darkness. Their ears detect the slightest movement.

The masked owl, secretive and stealthy, is one of the least known species in Australia. Their talons are, proportionally, some of the largest of the birds of prey. The females are larger and darker than the males.

For another layer of symbolism, Oracle represented Athena in Morrison's Justice League.
