It's just been drilling in my brain the whole day today :(. To be bound, for Elena, means to be doubted. Constant doubt, self-doubt, supervision. And it sets up the person that's been the source of unconditional acceptance for her ever since she turned as the potential epicenter of doubt. She should stay away from Damon, only she doesn't want to stay away from Damon (because if everyone doubts her motivations, then by default they also doubt Damon's action; he's just as isolated as he is), only she doesn't know if she's allowed to not stay away from Damon. I believe the word we're looking for is "clusterfuck" :(. It's not even about her romantic relationship with Damon: it's about going through yet another identity crisis without her preferred support system.

because it's a question of identity, nature vs. nurture. do you like something because you like it or because someone else liked it and that influenced your liking it? it reminds me of family influence, tbh. or even the influence of dating someone new and getting lost in their interests

I think it might work for what the show is doing, as an extended metaphor? "She isn't changing because of herself, she's changing because this older guy she fell for influences her." Figuring out the actual extent of this influence? CLUSTERFUCK!
