Secondly,
would've made my growing up a bit easier, just like a bunch of heroines fueled by the Madonna/whore complex made it a bit more difficult
/hugs. yes. I feel so similarly about Elena. She is the character that defies this complex, and because she has it. She expects it of herself; the people around her point that out and in ways expect it as well -- but at her core, Elena is not a trope. She is as real a character and a person as any other. She is all the female characters I've ever wanted to write as a teenager but never really could, because all those tropes seemed to lock me in before I could understand what they were and why. So when I see Elena reject Damon, slap him across the face, have her brother compelled, tell Stefan she doesn't believe he loves her -- it's just like watching all those tropes shattering. That's why I love her.

YES, this! And that's why I just need her to be Elena. I need her to do all the wrong things and not necessarily learn all the life lessons. My girl is not a cautionary tale.
