This is jarring analogy because John Winchester is fucking Mikael. I have a whole post in me about that but it keeps veering into LAWL TVD IS BETTAR which a) um, duh? and b) ugh, comparisons.

Seriously, though. He witnesses his wife being killed by a supernatural creature, and that motivates him to become a demon hunter who tracks down his wife's killer... I tried to imagine John drinking beer with yellow-eyed demon, and then my brain imploded XD.

Which Damon knows, which Damon never *questions*, and his awareness of that just makes him commit to his whole wounded romantic brat prince schtick even more, thus creating a self-perpetuating spiral of violent, horrible love.

He can, there's not anyone or anything stopping him from making excuses. He just WON'T because he's DAMON SALVATORE and his refusal to lie to himself or anyone else is just a big old FUCK YOU to everyone and everything.
