Here is where not being a shipper is a definite advantage as everything worked out pretty well for me. I was pretty wrong though, I was convinced Elena would pick Damon and it would all go horribly badly! (So maybe I was half right...)
If I was a an SE shipper though, I would be feeling pretty angry this morning, the whole foundation of that relationship has just disappeared overnight.
It also worked for me, and I am a bit of a shipper ;). But Elena-stanning comes before shipping, so here it is.
I still can't get over the fact that Elena chose Stefan because he symbolized affirmation of life for her, and a few minutes later she refused to be saved by him and chose to die instead. This is THE CHOICE Elena made. Not some triangle shit, THIS. Elena chose to die. And she so didn't die for Matt. She made a sacrifice, she gave away the life his father gave for her, to pay that debt. Survivor's guilt. She should've died that night, and she didn't. Time to pay up.
That's the best reading of that I've seen so far. No lie. You may have just made me feel a tiny bit better about Vampire Elena. On the other hand wouldn't Damon say that Elena always chooses to die? She's been throwing herself at Klaus trying to make sure everyone else lives. So no her car actions don't surprise at all. Her as a vampire is going to be pretty interesting though.
I've been hoping for Vampire Elena for months, so I actually got exactly what I wanted! And I loved the way it was done. There were some incredible narrative twists in this episode. Like, WHOA. I'm trying to formulate some coherent thoughts.

I need to rewatch as the stream made it very hard to follow the underwater bits but that makes sense.
