Damon Salvatore, King of Self-Awareness, is tired of Elena taking the easy way out. If she doesn't want him, fine. But she has to DECIDE.

The more I think about it, the more I convince myself that Damon might not actually need Elena to love him. I mean, she let him see her as she is, together with raw want and morally dubious choices. She trusts him enough to admit she desires him without loving him, and to act on this desire. It's a very big thing for Elena. And now I'm wondering if Damon would go for it. If he could learn to cherish Elena's lack of love. No one else gets to see her like that.

Ooh, but then you're right, it's also true that Damon doesn't realize she's still in transition. So he's holding her to standards that she might not yet be ready for.

I don't think Damon is aware of Elena growing up. He's been treating her as a grown-up from Day One. I mean, when he was human, a 17yo girl WAS an adult, and I don't think it occurred to him to readjust his standard.
