This is a Damon/Elena 3x19 post. Basically, I'm writing down ALL THE THOUGHTS, because I can't contain myself. You've been warned.

I will probably come back to this later after I've contemplated it more, but the part I have to comment on the most is the hands part. That part was so...just, that he couldn't get it quite right, that it wasn't smooth and cool and fingers didn't lace perfectly and all that? Oh, metaphor for their whole relationship. *sigh*

So I don't know how to comment to this without just copy-pasting the whole thing. Problem.

The performance (and lack thereof) aspect of this episode was actually stunning. Because that is who Damon and Elena are to each other - the one person who doesn't buy into whatever act the other's selling that day. There can be no performance with them. But they put on the costumes anyway, knowing full well it won't work but needing the spectre of a shield. So when Damon catches Elena looking at him, both of them unguarded, and decides not to pretend he can hide from her? It's magnificent. It's an explicit acknowledging of who they are together, and it's a tacit agreement to just let it happen.

When Elena stares at Damon in the motel room, she does it in secret: she closes her eyes immediately when he spots her, hides back. And then she changes the rules, open her eyes and stares at him openly. And THIS is the game-changer.EXACTLY. This could easily have been like all those other moments of almost. But Elena can't let this one go. They never

Damon Salvatore, King of Self-Awareness, is tired of Elena taking the easy way out. If she doesn't want him, fine. But she has to DECIDE.

The more I think about it, the more I convince myself that Damon might not actually need Elena to love him. I mean, she let him see her as she is, together with raw want and morally dubious choices. She trusts him enough to admit she desires him without loving him, and to act on this desire. It's a very big thing for Elena. And now I'm wondering if Damon would go for it. If he could learn to cherish Elena's lack of love. No one else gets to see her like that.

The sad thing is that this show pulled the D/E off so flawlessly (I agree), and the rest of the episode was so meh. I really wish that Rose hadn't just been an exposition tool.

I like your insights very much. Plus I agree that neither Stefan or Damon does recognize that she's still growing. Hopefully, the show keeps developing her. I love D/E, but I'm so happy to get an episode about Elena.
