Stefan is not Elena's first choice any more.
She is exhausted, lonely and lost. She's still clinging to Stefan, but it's partly guilt, partly going through the motions, and partly just not knowing what to do. She sent Jeremy away, Alaric needs to stay away, Caroline and Bonnie are taking care of Bonnie, Damon hostile. That leaves Elena with Matt and Stefan, and she tries to be in touch with both of them, because what else can she do? She doesn't choose Stefan now. She doesn't choose anyone right now. She doesn't know what she feels, doesn't know what to do, she just wants to close her eyes and get through this shit. Right now, Elena is chaotic.
It might or might not leave an opening for Damon. For the first time he really does have a chance to win her fair and square. Knowing Damon, he will fuck it up ;).
