I HAVE ARRIVED WITH MY GROSS COMMENT - PART ONE ever_neutral February 22 2012, 06:05:49 UTC
BLESS YOUR RAPTOR MACRO

Yes to your whole Stefan-as-unreliable-narrator section. A+.

HAHA NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ASKED ME IF DAMON IS PERCEPTIVE. Yes. Good.

I think it's interesting how, unlike Stefan's totally different treatment of the two women, Damon pretty much loves both Elena and Katherine in exactly the same way. He'll wait for them; he'll do terrible things for them; he wants to save them; he wants to kneel at their feet in transcendent worship. He's not looking for "redemption", to ~do over his past mistake; he's simply looking for a home for his devotion, a queen to his huntsman. So, the fact that Elena might disappoint him - by having more things in common with Katherine, by not living up to that idealised image of the good!doppelganger - doesn't even matter. Because ultimately, it's not about her. ;)

Damon doesn't trust binary oppositions; after all, he is a part of one himself, and he knows how hard he has to work to keep it up ;).Y E S. I think it has to do with the fact that Damon is both writer and performer ( ( ... )

GROSS COMMENT - PART TWO ever_neutral February 22 2012, 06:08:31 UTC
Even when he tells her that he doesn't deserve her, he neglects to say what makes her so special. Damon is egocentric, and when he talks about love, he mostly talks about himself.

Word. "I don't deserve you" doesn't really have anything to do with the type of person Elena is. That whole speech is about Damon feeling inferior to STEFAN (= the good brother who IS deserving), not Elena. Damon doesn't see this as a situation where he just has to work to "deserve" her love. Love is, or it isn't. It's why, for him, Elena is NOT about redemption. Because Damon isn't looking for redemption; he's looking for acceptance.

The Salvatores have a history of struggling with a 145-yo trauma they never fully processed (especially not Damon), and when they set up a stage, they often end up re-enacting situations from the past (perhaps unconsciously). It's them who inserts Elena in the place of Katherine, and sometimes she ends up making the same choices.THIS. Elena is continuously trying to be the subject of her own narrative, not a symbol in the ( ... )

YES, THANK YOU! This whole speech is about Damon. In right circumstances, I could imagine him saying the very same thing about Katherine. "I don't deserve you! Stefan is the better Ripper, I know that!"

Nah, you won't get hate mail. 1) You didn't say anything that terrible; 2) Don't worry, it's by the end of the post, nobody will get this far ;).

I especially enjoy the fact that you could white out Elena's name in this paragraph, and come out with a spot-on description of Damon. ;)

Well, they are one, aren't they? We've already decided they are ;).

FUCK THIS POST.

INDEED, FUCK IT! Also, I love everything your comment chooses to be.

And Stefan is always just waiting for everyone to realize that Damon is the more-worthy brother because Damon doesn't have to pretend to be anything. Damon feels in a way that is real and genuine and that means he deserves to be loved back. Whereas Stefan is, of course, a fraud. It's only a matter of time before everyone realizes this. Ugh, fucking idiot stupid Salvatores.

BLESS YOU, DEAR!

Awww, you used one of the few German words I actually know ;). And hey, look, Damon is a mess, and we managed to make it sound like it's a good thing ;).

I think there's a lot of replaying in what the Salvatores do, even if it's mostly unconscious. It's almost like Damon is trying to repeat the past, while Stefan is trying to stage the opposite of the past. Hey, maybe that's why it bugs him so much that Elena kissed Damon? That just sounds TOO MUCH like the past.

Girl. Your words make me emote in public spaces.

Damon doesn't trust binary oppositions; after all, he is a part of one himself, and he knows how hard he has to work to keep it up ;).

Made me giggle to myself wildly while on lightrail.

It's not her fault that Stefan keeps describing her as a Madonna. She's never described herself like that. In fact, Elena hardly ever describes herself. She's work in progress. Sometimes she tries to say “This is who I am”, but mostly, she ends up asking: “What does it say about me?”.

Made me do a little twirl in my cubical.

And now I have to work for realz. *shakes fist at RL responsibilities*

I'll be back!

Ooooh, this post is lovely. I especially like the way you think about the historical evolution of romantic love as something Katherine experienced first-hand. What an unlife!
