This is yet another spontanous TVD meta. Because I have feelings about the last episode, and I have FEELINGS about what I currently see all around the internet. So, you know, it's either writing a meta, or spontanously growing a set of fangs and eating random people. This meta is a pitchfork in the hand of an angry God

I basically agree with this whole post. I totally think you have an accurate reading of Elena's journey, both in this post and the previous one, that she is identifying a lot with Damon in this season. I think a large theme of this season, actually, has been Elena's dark mirrors- she empathizes with Rebekah to describe her as "the girl who lost her mother too young, who loves recklessly even if it destroys her" and she clearly isn't thinking about just Rebekah. She identifies with Jeremy's struggles with holding onto Anna, and asserts at the end that she won't love a ghost forever. And I'm sure there are plenty of other examples that aren't so glaringly obvious, all showing how Elena, who has been mostly sweetness and light for s1 and s2, does have a dark side, has always had it, and it is what is looking back at her in the mirror now that she has had so much else stripped away from her.
I absolutely agree about the sexual motivations of Elena and not acting on attraction- something I find really refreshng on this show, that attraction and chemistry doesn't lead to automatic sex. I love that your analysis is that the kiss, and the lack of resistance to it, is not an issue of attraction- that's there, and it's a non-issue. It's about emotional places and identity, and that is something that will have further implications- especially for Elena, and where she chooses to go after not rejecting her identifying so much with Damon.

YES! Sex drive is powerful, but it's not some ultimate power that cannot be controlled.
