Before I start with the episode reaction, I'm gonna carry on with the meme. I've been waiting for Day 5 :D.

Omg you just reminded me that I never finished my 30 days. I'll have to get onto that.

BUT YES, I CHOSE THE SAME EPISODE. BECAUSE OMG.

My favorite thing about this scene is that Stefan uses a phrase: What we do now will define us, and Damon behaves like he couldn't care less, but then, when he sees Katherine in the evening, he actually uses the same phrase: This could be our defining moment. So he was listening, and he paid attention, and it was important to him (by the way, the same thing happens in 2x08; when Damon has his I love you speech, he also quotes Stefan when he says: I just need you to hear this).

THIS. One of my fave things about the way Stef and Damon interact.

Favourite quote? Let's see. Maybe. "No rules, Stefan. Don't you remember? No rules." I just. ♥

It's also the last time when Damon is honest about himself without creating a "safety zone" first (like, deathbed confession, or telling Elena things and compelling her to forget). Just look at him. If you want to forget what happened, fine. But I can't. Or his entire speech for Katherine. 100% vulnerability. Can you imagine Damon saying something like this now?

OMG THIS THIS THIS. EXCEPT. I feel he did. Sort of. He sort of came back to that place. I'm thinking of the end of 305. He is so fucking open with Elena right there. And it's quite shocking, because he's been closed for so long. But I will never leave you... it was SO BARE.

This quote didn't even occur to me here. It's awesome, but it's repeated in several episodes, so I don't associate it with any particular episode. This line is, like, the essence of Katherine, especially the way Nina says it. Wonderful :D.

I'm thinking of the end of 305. He is so fucking open with Elena right there. And it's quite shocking, because he's been closed for so long. But I will never leave you... it was SO BARE.

Yes, he is quite open there, but he's not saying much about himself. Now that I think about it, in s3 Damon has moments in which he stops putting up a show when he's with Elena (like in 3x09; he just has an outburst of anger in front of her, and he hardly ever smashes things in front of other people), but he isn't very verbal about it. He doesn't give speeches the way he used to in s2 ("This could be our defining moment"; "I don't deserve you"; "I'm having an existential crisis"). He just sits there, says a word or two, and lets her see. Which is an interesting twist I'm not entirely sure how to read yet. On one hand, Damon used those speeches to stage things, so him being silent might be more honest that him expressing his feelings verbally. On the other hand, he doesn't really help Elena understand, he just hides behind this silence. Knowing Damon, probably both things are happening at the same time, because he is so contradictory that he could actually make such a contradiction work for him.
