In which my year continues unabated

When M naps, we usually leave the side of his crib down. In that position, it's still about three inches higher than the crib, and there's simply no way he could roll over it and fall. It makes it easier to pick him up and put him down, too, so we've just taken to leaving it like that.

On Tuesday, during naptime, he somehow got his leg hooked over the side of the crib, and in the process of rolling over, gave it a bad twist. He complained about it badly that evening, but on Wednesday and Thursday, it seemed to be getting better. This morning, though, it seemed to be worse. Wednesday and Thursday, he would wince and say, "That really really hurts!" if the leg was shifted outside a certain range, but this morning, it would cause him to break out crying in tears. So we called his orthopedist about it.

This afternoon, my wife took him to the hospital for X-rays and an examination... and the verdict is that his hip is broken.

Yes, broken. It seems that, as a non-walker, his bone density is very low. We knew this, but we didn't know how low it was, that giving his hip a bad twist could actually break the bone.

He's being cast-ified now, and will have to spend the next three weeks in a sitting position. I have no idea how he's going to nap and sleep for the night. In a car seat, maybe...?

This sucks. But it's about par for 2010. Particularly the month of May. May has really sucked. I'm glad it's almost over.
