According to the rules posted on this community's personal page, papers are not allowed to be posted here.

But it happened today and the world did not end.

This I am posting this community's first poll. Poll Posting papers for comment

I'd fear plagiarism. Anyone could come and copy your paper and paste it as their own. Just a thought.

This exactly.

Yup. I personally wouldn't post mine for fear of plagiarism, but it's fine if others want to do it, and I wouldn't mind reading or commenting on ones that interest me.

Are you worried that you'll lose credit for your original ideas or that some thief will steal your idea?

We're all undergrads right? How many of us are submitting essays to conferences/journals? If its a essay for a class...I dunno, maybe I'm less cynical in this regard than you are....

I agree that there's a fear of plagiarism, yes, but I think members only and behind a cut is a good enough to avoid that. Yes, like enders_shadow said, there might be spies (admittedly that comment made me laugh outloud), but I'd like to think since we're all undergrads here who have had the "NO! PLAGIARISM IS BAD!" newspaper whacked against our heads, I'd like to think none of us would go out of our way to steal a paper from each other in this community.

Besides, I think the need for supportive advice for papers > plagiarism, and supportive advice always helps a community grow, at least I think :) /naiive optimism

I like how nobody has picked the "I'm not sure" option. Everyone here has opinions :)

(Btw I'm a complete lurker in this community, so if I seem like I'm coming in out of the blue, that's exactly the case.)
I don't object to the idea of using this community as a place to find people willing to offer feedback and editing help, but I think actually posting papers is, for the reasons above, just a plain bad idea. Not that any of it would probably really happen, but the possibility is there and why risk it?

If I were to post a paper looking for critique from the people here, I would probably actually post an abstract/summary and ask for anyone interested to send me an e-mail. Slightly more effort but it would greatly cut down on the chances of anything sinister happening. (Plus, if people have Google accounts, Google Docs is a great tool for having multiple inputs on one paper, and I'm sure other webmail services have similar stuff.)
