Symantec's Norton Internet Security is gone forever from from my laptop. Norton's list of sins is long but the highlights include enormous resource hog and a large drag on connectivity speed. Symantec grated on me even farther when I renewed the subscription 31 days early last year only to find the clock was reset to one year. That cost me 31 days of service I all ready paid for. Wanting to wait until I got my money's worth, I waited until there was one day left to go on the subscription before flushing it.
The final straw came with the
Sony Root Kit fiasco. For many long weeks into the Sony mess, Symantec steadfastly refused to acknowledge that it was a problem, let alone do anything about it. How many people were infected while trusting Norton's Internet Security to protect them from just this kind of threat?
I am pleased to announce removing the Symantec programs was painless and went well. I thank the computer Gods that all the stories about having to pry Norton's cold dead fingers from around my system folder and registry files were untrue in my case. A high priest in the computerized temple, I am not.
My
sister recommended
F-Secure. I bought it online last night. It installed easily and the first thing it did when it ran was catch and remove a piece of spyware. It seems to load faster on boot and there is a noticeable improvement in performance from e-mail clients and surfing the web.
We'll see how it goes.
Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere.
