The last few days in Providence were awesome, but very low-key. Jared was manic with tour planning, and I was writing like mad. It suited both of us to spend the days sometimes entirely inside, clacking away on our respective laptops.
Jared is simply awesome. We're simpático. He cooks incredible vegan crepes. He absolutely believes in my poetry and had NO problem with my soaking up half his studio the week before he and B. Dolan started touring. Catch them if they're in your neighborhood, for real. Both of them are on fire right now. I was lucky enough to see Bernard, Sage Francis (a first!) and Jared's band, Prayers for Atheists, the first night I was in Providence. What an incredible show. I am so thirsty to see incredible performers like these. I just kind of stare, mouth gaping, and absorb everything I can.
I also saw 3/4 of the NY-based troupe, Bitten Tongue.
mahoganybrowne was incredible, of course, as was Eboni. I thought Falu (sp?) was great as well. I really like what they're doing, braiding and weaving all their poems together into a continuous show. Providence was their first memorized performance, and they're already a force. Keep your eye on these women.
I already mentioned GPL, which was amazing.
radioactiveart and
theryk are two of my oldest and favoritest poets in the slamily. I hung out with my friend Kári a few times as well. Saw my old friend Joanna from high school. Mostly, though, Providence was all about writing and eating amazing homemade vegan food and gabbing with Jared when our eyes got tired of staring at screens. I feel like I left Providence knowing that I have a new place to call home...
