A Night at the Bowery

Feb 04, 2009 15:25

Last night I met up with an old friend (actually, a huge crush) from high school at the Bowery Poetry Club. We watched the open mic, and my nervousness progressed from gentle trembling to a mild fear I'd vomit or pass out. So it goes. I did neither.

My feature, if I may say so, rocked. It was absolutely the best feature I've done. I had a hell of a lot of fun, and the audience did, too. It was especially exciting for me because people glommed onto my most recent, more literary work as opposed to the old school bells-and-whistles poems. I felt so affirmed. And I realized how much I love bringing people joy. I love making people laugh and desire and dream. If I could do this all the time, I absolutely would.

The slam featured some of my favorite poets. Geoff Trenchard had an excellent poem, Akua brought gravitas and insight, and Joanna Hoffman and Ebony ripped shit. They were, deservingly, the last poets standing, and it was a real pleasure seeing two women of such talent and intelligence face off.

Suffice it to say, twosnoos got me TOTALLY drunk. That's two nights in a row, people! I warned him, but he kept dishing out the shots to me and my old crush. I got home before dawn, happily...

Another feature tonight. I'm bringing a bunch of page poems, so we'll see how that turns out!

Love you. Wish you were here.
