Summary - You has a question
“Gaku,” You asked softly, “can I ask you a question?”
Gackt lowered the screen on his Mac and put it to one side. He recognised that tone in You’s voice - it was his nervous, but serious tone. Gackt thought it deserved his full attention. “Anything,” he answered, patting the space on the sofa next to him.
You took the hint and sat down. “Why do you always say ‘I love you’ to me?”
Gackt paused. Was this a trick question? “Because I do,” he replied simply.
“No, no,” You said, “I know that. I mean, why do you say ‘I love you’ in English, instead of ‘aishiteru’ in Japanese. I don’t speak English.”
“You know what it means though.”
“That’s not the point!” You exclaimed. “Why do you always say it in English, and never in Japanese?”
“You,” Gackt said softly, “do you know how many of my songs have the word ‘aishiteru’ in them?”
You tilted his head and stared earnestly into space. It took Gackt a few moments, but he soon realised that You was actually trying to run through his entire back catalogue and count the songs that had ‘aishiteru’ in the lyrics.
“You’re so cute sometimes,” Gackt smiled, “but it was a rhetorical question that can be answered simply by saying, a lot.”
“You write a lot of love songs so it’s only to be expected,” You shrugged.
“I write a lot of love songs that fit into storylines and aren’t based in truth,” Gackt explained. “I’ve sang ‘aishiteru’ so many times over the years without truly meaning it that the word itself has lost all meaning to me.”
“Oh,” You said sadly.
Gackt took You’s face into his hands, his cold silver rings chilling You’s skin. “But ‘I love you’… I rarely sing that. Those words still have power and meaning to me, so I say them to you because you mean the world to me.”
“Oh,” You said, smiling happily.
“Yes, oh,” Gackt repeated mockingly although there was only laughter in his voice. “I can say ‘aishiteru’ though, if you’d prefer that.”
“No,” You replied, stealing a chaste kiss when Gackt didn’t expect it, “I like having something that is purely mine. Let ‘aishiteru’ stay in your songs.”
“Anything for you,” Gackt replied, stealing a kiss back.
You laughed. “Can I ask for one more favour from you?”
“Anything for you,” Gackt repeated again.
“If ‘I love you’ is now mine... then promise me you’ll never perform ‘Faraway’ live again?”
Notes
1) This idea just jumped me so I wrote it out in about 20 minutes. Hope it's not too full of mistakes/fluff!
