drabble: your song

Jul 26, 2011 17:34

Blaine took a deep, shuddery breath. Stop it, he instructed sternly. This is no different from auditioning for the Warblers or theme parks, or any other audition you've had in your life. Except, of course, that it was. Blaine shifted uncomfortably. The problem was that these people were Kurt's friends. They were the people he'd left the safety of Dalton for. Blaine had met them all at least once, and he knew that some of them (Finn, Rachel, Mercedes, and maybe Santana? Blaine wasn't sure about Santana, but according to Kurt she liked very few people so he wasn't sure if he should assume that her smile meant he was one of them) liked him well enough. But what about the rest of them? Like Puck? Or Tina?

Kurt had told him many times that Blaine had the problem of wanting everyone to like him. But mostly Blaine just wanted Kurt's friends - well, Kurt's family, to like him.

Arms slid around his waist. Blaine relaxed a little.

"Nervous?" Kurt murmured with amusement into his ear. Blaine scowled.

"No," he lied unconvincingly. Kurt's soft huff against his ear told Blaine that he'd heard the uncertainty as well. Blaine sighed. "They're important to you, Kurt," he said.

He heard the smile in Kurt's voice as he said, "They've seen you perform before, Blaine."

"Well, yes," Blaine admitted. "But the first time everyone was drunk and the second time half of them were gone or too busy dancing and making out. And your director's never heard me sing."

Kurt's arms tightened around Blaine's waist. "You'll do fine, honey," he said. "Trust me, we've seen so much worse." He lowered his voice. "Did I tell you about the time Rachel lost her voice? Or when Lauren decided to do a solo? Or about all the times Mr. Schue has rapped?"

Blaine laughed and tugged his way out of Kurt's hold, turning to look up at him. "If I'm worse than all of that, will you dump me?"

Kurt waved a hand. "Oh no," he said. "I need the arm candy, after all. I'll just pointedly ignore you for a few days, that's all."

"Well, if that's all," Blaine said agreeably, stepping back into Kurt's space.

"I'm glad you came here," Kurt said quietly, wrapping his arms around Blaine's waist once more.

Blaine smiled up at him. "Me too," he said, "even if it means I'm washing my clothes so often my mom thinks that all we're doing is having sex."

Kurt gasped and swatted at his shoulder. "Blaine!" he hissed. "You told her we're not, right? Right?"

Blaine shrugged, smirking a little. "She gave me a very long and awkward version of The Talk, told me to use condoms, and then sent me on my way. I figured it was better to just get it over with."

Kurt groaned. "I'll never be able to look your mother in the face again, you do realize that."

"Hey, you're not the one who got a lecture on the proper amount of lube to use," Blaine said. "Granted, she didn't really have much of an idea how much, but she tried to lecture me about it, and that was scarring enough."

"Guys?" Mr. Schue approached from the side. Kurt immediately flushed a dark red and Blaine had stifle his laughter with his hand. Mr. Schue gave them a strange look, shrugged, then said, "Blaine are you ready to start? Everyone's here, finally," he sent a glare over at Puck, who gave a cheerful wave.

The nerves, which had disappeared during his conversation with Kurt, came back. "Ah, yes," he stuttered. Mr. Schue gave him a sympathetic look and a pat on the back.

Kurt pressed a kiss to the top of his head. Blaine heard awww's from the other side of the room, but he ignored them. The girls had been awww-ing over him and Kurt since he'd first started McKinley (and, if he was honest, way before that too).

"Don't be nervous, honey," Kurt told him. "You're Blaine Warbler, King of Jumping on Furniture, remember? Although if you jump on Brad's piano, he'll probably murder you in your sleep, so you shouldn't do that. But still. You've got this. They'll love you."

Blaine smiled, his nerves calming a little. "Thanks, Kurt," he said.

Kurt gave him another squeeze, then took off towards the other side of the choir room, taking a seat next to Mercedes. Blaine watched him and made a sudden decision. He'd been planning on performing Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson, just to impress them with his ability to sing female songs without changing any of the lyrics, but now . . . . Blaine smiled a little and turned to the piano. Brad was giving him an impatient look, eyebrow raised.

Blaine hurried up to him and whispered his new song choice into Brad's ear. When he pulled back, Brad looked mildly impressed and he nodded. Blaine's grin widened and he hurried back to the center of the choir room. As Brad started playing the opening chords, Blaine saw the look of recognition dawning on Kurt's and Rachel's faces before he started to sing:

"My gift is my song . . . and this one's for you.
And you can tell everybody this is your song.
It might be quite simple but now that it's done.
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind, that I put down in words . . . .
How wonderful life is now you're in the world."

Blaine had a very fond respect for Elton John, but he'd decided that he wanted to use the version from Moulin Rouge! which had been his favorite movie since he was fourteen years old. Kurt shared his love for it - they'd watched it together when they were still friends, had ended up collapsing on each other crying at the end, and they'd sung the songs at each other for the week afterwards. Because of that, Blaine had learned that one of Kurt's favorite scenes was where Christian sang this to Satine.

Blaine continued to sing, never taking his eyes off of Kurt.

"I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses, well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on."

Blaine approached Kurt, who was watching him with his mouth parted, his eyes shining, and pulled him to his feet. Kurt's mouth curved into a soft smile, as Blaine sang to him:

"So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen."

Kurt looked a little teary-eyed, but his smile was as big as the one he'd worn during Somewhere Only We Know last year, and it made Blaine's heart feel warm and fuzzy. He knew his own smile was just as wide as he finished:

"My gift is my song . . . and this one's for you.
And you can tell everybody this is your song.
It might be quite simple but now that it's done.
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind, that I put down in words . . . .
How wonderful life is now you're in the world."

Blaine took a deep breath as Brad let the final chords linger in the air. He blinked when he realized he was surrounded by clapping and looked to see the entire Glee club beaming at him.

"That was awesome, dude!" Finn said, standing up to give him a bro hug. As he did, he whispered to Blaine, "You just made Kurt really happy, so thanks--"

"What a marvelous display of romance!" Rachel cut in, smiling brightly. "As an avid Moulin Rouge watcher since it first came out, I must say that was a wonderful cover of it, Blaine Warbler! Perhaps we can convince Mr. Schuester to add it to the setlist for this coming Sectionals--of course, I'll probably get all the solos again, but there's no harm in trying!"

"I think that was a compliment in Rachel-speak," Kurt said quietly. He was still smiling. "That was wonderful Blaine."

Blaine's heart was doing fluttery, jumpy things. "I'm glad you liked it," he said, just as softly.

"See?" Puck said suddenly, making Blaine jump. "Serenading always works the magic. No chick--" Kurt harumphed, which made Puck add quickly, "or queer dude, whatever, can resist a man who sings." He gave Lauren a hopeful look that made her roll her eyes.

"No, I'm still not putting out for you the next time you sing to me," she said bluntly.

Kurt shuddered.

"Well!" Mr. Schuester said quickly. "I think we can all agree that Blaine is an excellent addition, correct?" There was a chorus of yeses from the room. "Welcome to New Directions, Blaine," Mr. Schuester added, with a soft smile. "Now, let's start getting ready for Sectionals! Ah, Puck, you want to do another solo for Lauren? Alright then . . . ."

Blaine took a seat on Kurt's other side. As Puck sang his song ("Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)" by Mika, a song choice Blaine approved of, even if it wasn't really Puck's range or style), Kurt took Blaine's hand in his own and entwined their fingers. Blaine felt happiness blooming in every part of his body.

Yup, he thought, watching as Puck danced around the room, his hand firmly held by Kurt's, Nothing to be nervous about after all.
