The Writers Handled Brittana in Sexy So Well
I feel like a large portion of fandom was expecting Santana to be the blockage, considering she (as seen in the episode) rarely talks about her feelings, sleeps with a lot of guys, and might be a little homophobic, considering her interaction with Kurt.
But in the end, it was Brittany, and that surprised and pleased me most of all.
I adore Brittany. I think she’s wonderful. And I’m glad that the writers gave such an honestly Brittany reaction the Santana’s confession: I don’t think it would have been nearly as believable if she’d just dropped Artie like that, considering that they’ve had a good relationship so far and they seem to geninuely like each other.
But most of all I’m proud of how the writers turned it around on us. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to be surprised that Brittany prevented the relationship instead of Santana. But I think what makes me the happiest is that it’s showing that Santana has a heart: that she’s not preventing her relationship with Brittany because she’s cruel or a bitch.
I love that little scene at the end where Brittany and Artie are together and Santana is watching them sadly. It humanizes her so much. As someone who’s liked Santana for a while, I’ve very proud of her character tonight: she confronted her fears and was ready to face them.
And, which is more telling than anything, she didn’t run to Artie about Brittany. She didn’t break up their relationship herself, as she’s done with other couples. She let them be together. That, more than anything, tells me that Santana feels deeply for Brittany. She’s respecting her feelings on the matter. I expect that’ll change in the future: Santana seems to be possessive of people she likes. But I’m glad we got to see that sometimes she doesn’t just take: sometimes she gives back too.
tl;dr: major, major props to the writers for Brittana. It was handled with much respect and care, similiar to how Klaine is being handled right now, and I have to respect them for that.
