Christmas was fast approaching; the air was thick with festivity. Everywhere Sherlock turned there were fairly lights strung up and Christmas music playing through tinny speakers. Sherlock endured Christmas for John’s sake, wanting to please him. They had kept up the tradition every year of inviting Molly, Lestrade and Mrs Hudson over for drinks and nibbles. Mrs Hudson was well into her late eighties but she could still talk for England. On many occasions Sherlock had been forced to extricate himself from Mrs Hudson’s clutches lest he hear for the fourth time that evening about her great grandchildren.

This year was no different, and on Christmas Eve at eight pm sharp the doorbell rang. John jogged down the stairs to let Molly and her husband in. Molly had been married for five years, and if anyone thought that her husband resembled Sherlock in his looks then no-one dared mention it.

“Molly and Dan! Lovely to see you both,” John kissed Molly’s cheek and shook Dan’s hand. “Come up, Sherlock’s up there getting his ear chewed off by Mrs Hudson as usual! We’re expecting Greg any minute.”

John followed Molly and Dan up the stairs. Sherlock stuck his head around the door as he heard the approaching footsteps.

“Thank god. I don’t think I could bear to listen to Mrs Hudson mention the incident at her great grandchildren’s nativity play one more time.”

“That bad?”

“Judge for yourself, I’m sure she’ll tell you all about it in glorious detail before the night’s through!”

John playfully punched Sherlock in the arm.

“Don’t forget she made you your favourite mince pies. I’ve seen you eat three already, don’t pretend it wasn’t you.”

Sherlock grinned and ducked back in to the living room.

The doorbell chimed again and so John jogged back down the stairs to open it.

“Greg! Lovely of you to make it. And-?” Lestrade was with another man who John had not seen before. He was a shade taller than Lestrade with salt and pepper hair; his arm lightly around Greg’s waist.

“Sorry, this is Will, my partner. I hope it was okay to bring him, only he’s been away for a couple of weeks and we haven’t seen much of each other.”

“Oh, that’s fine,” John outstretched his hand to Will, who shook it firmly, “lovely to meet you finally!”

“And you, John. Greg’s told me all about Sherlock and your adventures.”

John blushed.

“I hope he’s told you the ones that make us seem like respectable gentlemen!”

Greg and Will laughed as John ushered them inside and up the stairs.

“Ah, Sherlock- this is Will, Greg’s partner,” John said, grabbing Sherlock and pulling him over to meet Will. Sherlock glanced at Will, his eyes roving over Will’s body a few time.

“Ah, a solicitor! Keeping with the law theme, then. Did you meet through a mutual case or after Lestrade retired?”

Will’s eyes widened slightly and he turned to whisper to Lestrade, “He’s just as good as you said he’d be!”

Will turned back to Sherlock and nodded.

“As a matter of fact we did meet through a case. You remember the Brocklehurst case, ooh, about six years ago? I was the suspect’s solicitor.”

Sherlock’s eyes narrowed.

“Yes, I remember. You were very irritating if I recall, and-”

“Oh, would you look at that, Molly is waving us over! Come on Sherlock.”

John pushed Sherlock over towards Molly and Dan, leaving Will gaping and Lestrade pinching the bridge of his nose.

Sherlock very politely asked Molly how she had been keeping and even pretended to pay an interest to Dan when he talked about his job as an accountant. When the hum of voices started to wash over him he excused himself and retreated to the kitchen. Sherlock ran some cold water and splashed it over his face. He closed his eyes and stood quietly in the kitchen, concentrating on the whirring of the fan in his laptop and the slight buzz of the fridge. After ten minutes Sherlock re-joined the gathering in the living room.

John was sitting next to Molly, deep in conversation. He was gesticulating wildly about something; from his actions it appeared as if he were recounting the most recent case to Molly. Sitting next to Molly and looking rather bored was a man Sherlock didn’t recognise. Sherlock was briefly amused, watching the man’s slight discomfort at the topic being discussed, and went over to introduce himself. John had told him to be more polite and now was a good time to start.

“Hello,” Sherlock extended his hand to the man, “I don’t believe we’ve been introduced. I’m Sherlock Holmes.”

The man frowned at Sherlock, and in his peripheral vision Sherlock could see that John had stopped talking and was now staring at Sherlock.

“Um, I’m Dan. Molly’s husband.”

The man was still frowning. Sherlock dropped his arm and wondered what was so alarming about being introduced. He turned towards John, who looked bemused.

“Nice to meet you, Dan. When did you and Molly get married?”

No-one spoke. Sherlock looked around the room, all eyes were on him. He’d been polite, so he couldn’t understand why everyone was reacting so strangely.

“Not good?” he whispered to John.

“Sherlock, I think you should go and lie down for a bit. You look like you haven’t slept in a week.”

Now that John mentioned it, Sherlock felt absolutely exhausted. He nodded, turned around and walked slowly to his bedroom. He didn’t bother to undress before climbing into his bed. He was asleep in minutes.
