The Hounds of Baskerville

A review of sorts.

I enjoyed it more than Scandal. I loved the theme of fear, and how that affected each of the characters in turn. I believe we are seeing much more of Sherlock’s humanity- last week he was faced with love, or at the very least sentiment, and this week it was doubt and fear. Benedict played lots of different shades of Sherlock in Hounds- we saw manic, fearful, desperate, in control and even trying to connect to John and explain their friendship. Sherlock isn’t this machine anymore- he’s human and it’s showing.

Russell Tovey was perfect- I really felt his emotional breakdown and the absolute terror he felt as he was sitting in house with the security lights keep coming on in the garden. My heart was thumping so hard! The parallels between Sherlock and Being Human were amusing, but I’m glad that Russell got the chance to play it from this angle.

The editing, my god, absolutely fantastic. The mind palace sequence blew me away. Sherlock in my opinion is a very visual person- we constantly see his deductions on screen that change or disappear with a wave of his hand or a shake of his head. This was beyond that- it was like actually stepping in to Sherlock’s mind.

I loved Sherlock’s manic energy as he was by the fireplace, grappling with his self doubt and fear; making a simple deduction with such ferocity just to prove to John that he is fine. Because that is Sherlock’s life- that he who he is. Without the deductions, what is left? John would say that wasn’t true, that Sherlock is more than that, but I think Sherlock would disagree, and the thought that he is losing his touch is extremely terrifying to him.

What do I want from next week? Angst. I want to get my teeth into it, I want to FEEL the emotions bleeding out of the television screen. I want John and Sherlock’s relationship to be laid out for everyone to see, for them to realise beyond all doubt what they mean to each other.
