Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unecessary words, a paragraph no unecessary sentences, for the same reason a painting should have no unecessary lines and a machine no unecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subject only in ouline, but that every word tell.
